Open The Books is a project of For The Good of Illinois, Inc., a 501(c)4 non-partisan, non-profit organization founded in 2007. Open the Books is an iOS and Android app that allows citizens a transparent look at the United States government’s checkbook since 2000. With an impressive database of over 2.2 million federal employee salary histories, local government spending budgets, and more, Open the Books encourages accountability in all levels of federal spending. The app allows users to search salaries by location (by zip code or by using their current location) or by searching for a specific name. In addition, app users can review the federal checkbook by filtering by recipient or by categories like contracts, direct payments, farm subsidies, grants, insurance, and loans.
