Inner Strength Vibe brings mental health resources to under-resourced youth. Merging indepth mindfulness practice with innovative systems thinking helps students cultivate calm, curiosity, and care. Inner Strength Vibe challenges teach youth about their developing brains (the brain’s 300-million-year evolutionary history and what's happening right now during adolescence). Activities inspire youth with a time-travel journey through cultural shifts, showing how we now have more unique expression (cool!) but less social support. Teens learn about the interrelationship between sensations (hunger), thoughts (I want to eat), emotions (I’m h-angry), and actions (devouring chips). This helps them cool down strong emotions, dial back anger, increase self-care and self-forgiveness, and connect with friends. Informed by the latest trauma-sensitive perspectives to aid students with more serious mental health issues, this app is the only mindfulness app designed for adolescents that embeds access to free public mental health resources within the app. Built originally to extend Inner Strength’s classroom work with 15,000 teen in Philadelphia Public High Schools, Vibe is designed to support anti-violence efforts and stem the impulsivity and anger that has led to the second highest murder rate by guns per capita in the US in 2021. Vibe was developed to provide students with complex traumas and limited means realize their potentials by developing their optimism, positivity, and aspirations through self-regulation and self-care. The Inner Strength program was awarded a Philadelphia Social Innovators Award in 2019 for its work in Anti Violence. Vibe is the next iteration of this important work.
