About the Entry

OnTime is a free HTML5 application that provides Utah Transit Authority (UTA) riders up-to-date information about current location of transit vehicles. UTA operates a fleet of more than 600 buses and paratransit vehicles, 146 light rail vehicles, and 63 commuter rail cars in a 1,600 square mile service area covering six counties. The Authority serves approximately 1.8 million and operates in one of the largest geographical service areas of any transit agency in the U.S. The OnTime application answers the question almost every public transit rider has asked, “Did I miss the bus.” Real-time tracking lets riders know exactly where buses, light rail vehicles, and trains cars are now. Vehicle locations are refreshed every five seconds. Riders can locate vehicles two ways: either by searching for stops close to their current location or by searching transit routes. An easy to navigate map allows riders to find public transportation stops and routes nearby. In addition the application allows riders to search for route information based on scheduled routes. The accuracy of the users location may vary depending on the device being used. Mobile devices utilizing a data plan tend to pinpoint the users location with more accuracy whereas devices using Wi-Fi hotspots to connect to the web are less accurate. To further better serve transit riders, application users can sign up to receive scheduled SMS notifications when a transit vehicle is approaching a stop nearby. Riders can adjust the time for advanced notifications.
