The UCSF Diabetes Teaching Center's mobile app for the Android and iPhone offers an innovative new way for individuals with diabetes to explore their knowledge of the progression, treatment, and complications of diabetes. Users participate in quizzes that provide extensive feedback, comparing results with other contestants as they progress through multiple game levels by solving visual puzzles. Because there are 80 million people in the United States alone (23 million with diabetes and 57 million with pre-diabetes) cared for by only 4,000 diabetes medical specialists, this smartphone app is helping the masses with diabetes become more knowledgeable about their disease -- and hopefully extend their lives.
